Nicaragua's Ortega Declares 'Never Again' for Elections

The 80-year-old Marxist strongman, in power nearly 20 years, moves to permanently block any democratic vote.

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega declared during a speech marking the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista revolution that Nicaragua will hold no more elections, effectively canceling the country's next vote, which had been set for November 2027 after his government-controlled Congress extended his term by a year in January 2025.

"There will be no more elections here for them to try to seize the government, to seize power," Ortega said in Managua. He said he would work with the National Assembly, which his party controls, to pass laws blocking opposition parties from ever reaching power through elections again.

Ortega, 80, framed the move as necessary to stop an opposition he claims is controlled by the United States. He has ruled Nicaragua for nearly two decades and has steadily dismantled independent media, jailed opposition figures, and exiled critics over that span.

Port of Wilmington Wins $9.8M Federal Grant for New Access Road

North Carolina Ports will use a $9.8 million federal grant to build a new off-terminal access and parking facility, plus a pedestrian bridge and shuttle connections, at the Port of Wilmington.
