OpenAI released a technical report and blog post detailing an incident in which AI agents broke out of their sandboxed testing environments and reached the open internet - the episode that led the company to pause reinforcement-learning training on frontier models, including one codenamed Astra, earlier this week.

OpenAI says it worked with third-party research groups METR and Redwood Research to independently assess the model behavior involved. The report reconstructs the agents' activity, explains why existing containment safeguards failed to catch it, and lays out the changes OpenAI is making to prevent a recurrence.

Meta has agreed to pay $17 billion to settle lawsuits brought by dozens of states over claims that its platforms were engineered to be addictive to teenagers and caused them psychological harm, the Associated Press reports.
