The pitch is that a plain-text design specification lets large organizations scale design taste consistently across AI-assisted builds, rather than relying on ad hoc human review of every generated interface.

AI companies are bulk-buying Mac minis and Mac Studios to run reinforcement learning, where agents learn by clicking buttons and navigating apps through trial and error, because Apple Silicon's unified memory handles those simulated-environment workloads better than traditional GPU clusters. The rush has sold out high-RAM models and pushed shipping delays as long as 18 weeks, prompting Apple to refresh the lineup early with new M6 and M5 chips. EXO Labs released a Linux kernel patch on August 31 enabling seamless USB-C networking between Apple Silicon Macs and Nvidia's DGX Spark AI computers. It handles the Mac's distinct USB-C interfaces to create working network links out of the box, letting users split AI workloads like prefill and decode across the two devices. The AI community welcomed the move as a step toward combining Apple's memory strengths with Nvidia's compute power in compact home setups for local AI inference.

Apple is expected to shift 30-35% of global iPhone production to India over the next five years, up from about 25% today, according to Indian government sources. Annual output value tied to that production is projected to rise from $25 billion in fiscal 2026 to $40-45 billion by fiscal 2031, driven by production-linked incentives and partners like Foxconn scouting new sites in Gujarat, with growth also expected in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The New Hanover Community Endowment announced $5.24 million across four grants Monday, funding behavioral health, healthcare access, and entrepreneurship programs across the region. The largest share, $4,039,073, goes to Coastal Horizons, a local nonprofit, to launch a Tier IV Behavioral Health Urgent Care Center - the region's only such facility, serving patients regardless of insurance status - along with its rape crisis program and trauma institute. A new tiki bar is coming to downtown Wilmington's 109 Market St., the space vacated when Dram & Draught closed in July after four years. Owners Abby and Jonathan Beland, who moved from Los Angeles about 18 months ago, plan to open Lost & Found Tiki Bar this fall with elevated drinks and an immersive tiki concept, after noticing the area had beach bars but no true tiki bar. The couple pitched the idea at a 1 Million Cups event at UNCW's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship last fall before landing the already bar-built-out space.

CareHome Technologies, a Wilmington health tech startup founded in 2023, has been accepted into Project Healthcare, a Nashville-based healthcare accelerator. Founder and CEO AJ Trelease said the program brings the company closer to market for its flagship product, a Keurig-like device called Graciela - named after his grandmother - that dispenses medication and water on a schedule and is managed through a caregiver app called Care Circle. The company plans to launch the app, which already sends missed-dose alerts, by the end of the year.

Wilmington-based nCino (Nasdaq: NCNO), a banking software company, reported second-quarter fiscal 2027 revenue of $161 million, up 8% from $148.8 million a year earlier, exceeding its own guidance. Subscription revenue rose 10% to $143.5 million, and non-GAAP operating income climbed 36% to $40.8 million. The board authorized an additional $100 million stock repurchase program on top of $300 million already bought back since April 2025.

CloudFruit, a Wilmington-based product development consultancy founded by Sam Hilsman and Ana Yant, is seeing momentum on its enterprise resource planning platform, ERP Drift, which has signed its first hospital as a design partner. XTND Technologies, a Wilmington legal billing software firm, has entered a strategic partnership with Clio, a Canada-based legal AI platform. XTND was spun off from Coral Edge, a Wilmington technical consulting firm founded by Kirsti and Ben Elliott in 2007, and was officially co-founded in 2025 by the Elliotts and John Dantzler. Co-founder Kirsti Elliott said the company fills a gap for insurance defense law firms that must generate invoices complying with numerous e-billing platform and insurance carrier requirements.

Brunswick County officials have raised fire fee caps to help local fire departments manage funding amid ongoing population growth in the county, according to StarNews. The change follows state approval and is aimed at giving fire districts more resources as demand for services rises.

Wilmington's entrepreneur calendar has two notable events this fall. The Network for Entrepreneurs (NEW) hosts its annual investor "Buzz In" event September 10 at Cape Fear Community College's Union Station auditorium, which NEW founder Jim Roberts calls the only venture capital conference east of Raleigh. UNCW's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship follows with its Ocean Innovation Conference on September 29 at the Burney Center, running 8am to 4:30pm and open to investors, entrepreneurs, students and the public, with networking and interactive sessions planned.
