A week defined by escalation and disaster abroad - a deadly US strike in Iran, Nepal's flood toll surging past 900, and a landmark Venezuela oil deal - alongside a major AI model launch and a changing of the guard at Apple.
Major indexes barely moved this week - the S&P 500 up 0.09% and the Nasdaq up 0.4% - while Intuit shares slid 7.08% (including a 3.37% drop on the latest day) and SpaceX stock kept climbing, up 4.56% on the week and 36.65% over the past month following its Cursor buyout. The 10-year Treasury sits at 4.78% and the average 30-year mortgage at 6.71% as of 9/3, and Paul Tudor Jones used the week to warn that the market's gains remain dangerously concentrated in just two megacap names.

Gemini 3.8 Flash Demand Overheats Google's TPUs
New: the coding-focused model topped a key benchmark, prompting a scramble to reset quotas and rework usage policies.
Google's Gemini 3.8 Flash, released this week, is leading the DeepSWE v1.1 benchmark for long-horizon software engineering tasks, matching or beating rivals at Flash's lower speed and cost. Demand from developer tools like Antigravity was high enough to overheat Google's TPUs (its AI chips), forcing a quota reset. After developers raised concerns that strict terms of service risked full Google account suspensions, Google updated its policies to limit any violation to the specific service involved.

Vercel CEO Backs WebMCP as the Missing Layer for AI Web Agents
Guillermo Rauch says agents need to work with the existing web, not around it.
Guillermo Rauch, CEO of Vercel (the company behind the Next.js web framework), said he's "super bullish" on WebMCP, an emerging standard that would let AI agents interact with websites directly rather than scraping pages built for humans. He compared it to how Tesla's self-driving software works within existing roads and stoplights rather than requiring new infrastructure, and said it could let sites like Next.js expose debugging information directly to agents.

AI Legal Startup Legora's Revenue Up 9x in a Year
Paul Graham calls the growth rate 'astounding' for a three-year-old company.
Y Combinator's Paul Graham said Legora, an AI legal research and drafting startup, has grown revenue more than 9x over the past year. Graham noted that pace is unusual even for an early-stage startup in its first six months, let alone one three years into its existence. The growth adds to signs that law firms are rapidly adopting AI tools, even as Wall Street banks separately push firms to pass AI-driven cost savings on to clients rather than billing extra hours.

Film Incentives, Bridge Funding Dominate Wilmington Candidate Forum
State Sen. Michael Lee and challenger Jessica Bichler sparred over the film grant program's finances.
Candidates for the N.C. Senate, N.C. House and New Hanover County Board of Commissioners debated film incentives, the New Hanover Community Endowment and infrastructure funding, including the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge replacement, at the Greater Wilmington Business Journal's Power Breakfast Thursday ahead of the Nov. 3 election. Republican incumbent Sen. Michael Lee said the state's film grant program has issued $100 million in the last 24 months, $91 million of which it didn't have, and said the legislature can't find that much money again in a year. Democratic challenger Jessica Bichler offered a differing view on the program's status.

Pender Board Recommends Denying 930-Home Age-Restricted Community
Planning board cited overdevelopment concerns for the 404-acre project on the New Hanover county line.
The Pender County Planning Board narrowly voted Tuesday to recommend denying a rezoning request for a proposed 930-home, 55-plus age-restricted community on 404 undeveloped acres off Sidbury Road, near the New Hanover-Pender county line. Builder McAdams Homes sought the rezoning from rural agricultural to a conditional district; the applicant's attorney argued age-restricted communities generate more tax revenue with less impact on schools and traffic than typical neighborhoods. County commissioners will make the final call.

Sequoia's Alfred Lin: Hire People Talented Enough to Make You Uncomfortable
The former Zappos COO says culture has to be set from day one, before scaling makes mistakes expensive.
Sequoia Capital partner Alfred Lin told early-stage founders to prioritize company culture from day one and to hire people so talented they create some discomfort, forcing everyone else to improve. Drawing on his time as Zappos' COO and CFO, Lin said skipping this early creates bigger problems once a company raises funding and scales. He added that ego is often what blocks founders from making a superior hire, even when the right choice brings a sense of relief.
