Iran Declares Restricted Zone in Strait of Hormuz

New: Houthi attacks tied to Iran wounded 73 in Saudi Arabia as tanker traffic through the oil chokepoint slows.

Iran announced a restricted zone in the Strait of Hormuz and threatened sanctions against vessels that enter it, Fox News reported, escalating tensions after US strikes on Iranian oil tankers over the weekend in response to Iranian missile attacks on US Navy warships. Reuters reported that traffic through the strait, which carries a large share of the world's seaborne oil, has slowed as shippers weigh the risk.

Iranian-backed Houthi forces separately launched a wave of attacks on Saudi Arabia that wounded 73 people, Saudi authorities told the Associated Press, widening the conflict beyond the direct US-Iran confrontation.

Canada's Retaliatory Tariffs on $20B of US Goods Take Effect

New: Ottawa's dollar-for-dollar response to Trump's latest tariffs officially began Monday.

Canada's tariffs on about $20 billion in US goods took effect Monday, the Associated Press reported, responding to President Trump's latest round of tariffs on Canadian goods.

The move follows a month in which Canada's economy shed 41,700 jobs while the US added 162,000, adding pressure on Ottawa as the trade dispute between the two countries escalates into direct retaliation.

YC: Better AI 'Harness' Turns a 30% Score Into 95%

New: Y Combinator-gathered research quantifies how much agent scaffolding matters, not just model weights.

Y Combinator said it convened researchers and founders to study what it calls the "harness" problem in AI agents - the tools, loops and guardrails wrapped around a model - which the accelerator argues get unfairly dismissed as "just scaffolding" or "just prompt engineering."

The same underlying model weights that score 30% on the ARC-AGI benchmark can score 95% with a better harness, YC said, adding hard numbers to this week's developer debate over whether the real bottleneck for AI agents is the model itself or the engineering built around it.

Guillermo Rauch, Vercel's CEO, announced the second round of his personal open-source grants program, giving $1,000 each to 35 contributors. This round's themes center on agent skills and tools, reflecting his view that reusable AI agent skills are becoming a valuable form of software in their own right.

Rauch Argues Linux Is Headed for 'Total Victory'

He says AI's demand for agent-programmable, open systems favors Linux over macOS across every device category.

Guillermo Rauch argued Linux is on track for dominance across desktop, mobile, server, IoT, embedded and robotics use cases. His case: Linux is the most agent-programmable operating system, while macOS makes it hard to even ship a small menu-bar app, and Linux benefits from a deeper base of open-source training data for AI models.

Vercel Ships Video Recording Tool for AI Agent QA

The agent-browser tool targets what Rauch calls software engineering's new bottleneck: review, testing and QA.

Vercel is shipping new functionality for its agent-browser tool, adding high-quality video recording aimed at software teams automating code review, testing and QA with AI agents, CEO Guillermo Rauch said.

Levels.io: The Smartest People Hold Opinions Loosely

The indie hacker behind Nomad List says clinging to consistency for its own sake is a mark of poor judgment, not principle.

Pieter Levels, the indie hacker behind Nomad List, said the smartest people he knows hold strong opinions weakly and change them when new information arises, while the least sharp people keep their opinions fixed just to appear consistent. He argued that in a fast-changing environment, adapting course beats sticking to a position purely for consistency's sake.
