OpenAI Says Its Next Model Solved a $1 Million Math Problem

A swarm of about 10,000 AI agents produced a proof for the Navier-Stokes equations in 88 hours, one of just six unsolved Millennium Prize Problems.

OpenAI said it produced a solution to the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of the seven Clay Mathematics Institute Millennium Prize Problems (six remain unsolved, each carrying a $1 million award). The proof came from an internal research group and roughly 10,000 coordinating AI agents running an unreleased, next-generation model the company says is "significantly more capable" than GPT-6 Astra, its current flagship.

The team says it reached the result in 88 hours, producing both an analytical proof and a formal verification in the Lean proof-checking language showing that Navier-Stokes fluid dynamics can produce a singularity, a point where the equations break down, in finite time. OpenAI described the solution as a vortex that spirals inward and stretches "like spaghetti."

OpenAI separately credited mathematicians Levent Alpoge and Tristan Buckmaster for related independent work on the problem, saying its team had no access to their unpublished results or any user data in reaching its own solution. The company called the new model a "step-function improvement" on many benchmarks and said it is still working to understand its capabilities before deciding how quickly to push further advances.

DeepMind Launches AI Map of Every Possible Human DNA Mutation

AlphaGenome Atlas scores 9 billion single-letter genetic variants, more than 30 times the size of the AlphaFold database.

Google DeepMind launched AlphaGenome Atlas, an AI-powered, searchable database that predicts the impact of all roughly 9 billion possible single-letter DNA changes in the human genome. The 1-petabyte dataset is more than 30 times larger than DeepMind's AlphaFold Database, the protein-structure resource that has become a standard tool in biology research.

The Atlas includes an AlphaGenome Variant Impact score that combines DeepMind's AlphaGenome and AlphaMissense models with other features to rank mutations from low to high impact and show how they cause damage, such as breaking gene switches or disrupting RNA splicing instructions. DeepMind says the goal is to let researchers link genetic variants directly to the molecular mechanisms they disrupt.

OpenAI Completes GPT-6 Astra Rollout to All Paid Tiers

The flagship model is now fully available in Codex and ChatGPT Work for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users.

OpenAI said GPT-6 Astra is now fully rolled out to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscribers inside both Codex, its coding tool, and ChatGPT Work, completing the model's staged release across every paid tier.

The update follows a run of comparisons pitting Astra against rivals on coding and cybersecurity benchmarks, including against Anthropic's Claude and Alibaba's Qwen3.8-Max. Full availability across enterprise and developer products removes the last gating for business customers evaluating the model at scale.

Brunswick County Home Sales Hit a July Record

671 homes sold last month, up 4.4% year over year, putting the county on pace to top $2 billion in 2026 sales.

Brunswick County posted its strongest July on record for home sales, with 671 homes sold, up 4.4% from July 2025, according to the Brunswick County Association of Realtors. New listings rose 7.6% to 825, the median sales price climbed 10.2% to $396,750, and total sales volume grew 12.6% to nearly $335 million. Of the homes sold, 37 went for $1 million or more, topped by a $2.9 million sale in Ocean Isle Beach.

Wilmington Health Lists Main Campus in Sale-Leaseback Deal

The provider is shifting most services to a new medical building near The Pointe at Barclay.

Wilmington Health listed its main facility at 1202 Medical Center Drive, more than 6 acres and a 66,000-square-foot building, for $11.85 million as part of a planned sale-leaseback. CEO Jeff James said the aging building is costlier to retrofit than replace, and most services, including lab, imaging, cardiology and orthopedics, will shift to a new 64,000-square-foot facility the provider is building on land it bought for $5.2 million in April.
